Your request to subscribe to our "Wilfred Ruprecht Bion
- Past and Future" Project" mailing list (bion97 mailing
list) has just been authorized. By this message I wish to
welcome you personally.


First of all, thank you for the interest you show in our
Project, which stemmed from the "International Centennial
Conference on the Work of W. R. Bion", held in Torino, Italy,
from July 16th to July 19th, 1997. Our aim is to keep thinking
on Bion's ideas as they were discussed in Torino: I feel the
Project can be an important step forward in working out
our ideas and exchanging our points of view concerning Bion's
legacy.

This list aims at being open and multidisciplinary.
We believe that psychoanalysis can evolve and develop optimally
only by encouraging a multidisciplinary participation on its
themes and complex questions. Bion spent a large part of his
life in trying to promote mental development and growth and we hope
that today's means of electronic communication can best fit these
purposes. The Internet is giving us a new opportunity of
thinking together and, in a certain sense, I do feel this is
quite a Bionian item. Well, I do recognize this might seem
rather a strange idea and a difficult undertaking: but ... we
will try to make "the best of a bad job" (W. R. Bion, 1979).


Please feel free to suggest joining us all those you think can
contribute to and get something out of our work. Borrowing once
again some words of Bion, I think that, in order to participate,
"all you have to do is to be mentally alive" ("A memoir of the
future", p. 178).


Ordinary netiquette rules apply to this mailing list. I'm sure you
know how to deal with posting, emoticons, flaming and so on.

"I'm 51, a psychiatrist and an IPA psychoanalyst, based in Torino,
Italy, working at the moment only in private practice as a psychoanalyst
and psychotherapist. My interest in Bion's works grew by meeting and
working together my colleague, and now my friend, Parthenope Bion,
the daughter of Wilfred, and an IPA psychoanalyst. We've been studying,
working, presenting papers and doing translations into Italian together.-
One more thing: English is not my mother tongue, so please accept my
uncertain use of it."
